Scope and Content Billiard Room, The George Hotel, Nos 19-21 George Street, Edinburgh This photograph of the billiard room of the George Hotel was taken in 1910 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hotel, which occupied the upper floors of three late 18th-century townhouses, was extensively remodelled in 1879. The billiard room, very much in the male domain of the hotel, is decorated with dark wall panels and leather seating. The style of the room is typically Edwardian and the influence of Art Nouveau can be seen in the design of the fire inset. The game of billiards was popular in the early 1900s, although it was still regarded as a 'gentleman's game'. It was played on an oblong cloth-covered table, with three balls struck with cues into pockets round the edge of the table. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
