Scope and Content View of Sitting Room, The George Hotel, Nos 19-21 George Street, Edinburgh The George Hotel was remodelled in 1879 from the upper floors of three Georgian townhouses built by John Young in c.1780. This photograph of the hotel's sitting room was taken in 1910 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The sitting room has its walls decorated in the traditional divisions of dado, filling and frieze. The plain cornice, dado panelling, dark embossed wallpaper and leather seating suggests the room was used more by men than women. The George Hotel dates from 1855 when it occupied the upper floor of No 19 George Street. It was remodelled in 1879 to include the upper floors of two adjoining houses, and the ground floor was redesigned for use by the Caledonian Insurance Company. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
