Scope and Content Inner Hall, Blairvadach House, Shore Road, Shandon, Rhu, Argyll & Bute This photograph of the inner hall of Blairvadach House, Rhu, was taken in 1903 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house was designed c.1850 by the architect, John Thomas Rochead, for Sir James Anderson, Lord Provost of Glasgow. The room, in a Jacobean style, has elaborately panelled walls and an intricately carved and pilastered arched screen leading to the outer hall. It is furnished in a comfortable, masculine style, and lit by a splendid Art Nouveau electric light fitting. The Art Nouveau style of electric light fitting often involved the use of copper or pewter. A very popular style was multiple lights supported by metal arms fashioned in the shape of plant stems, and suspended from the ceiling by a single 'root'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
