Scope and Content Drawing Room, Duntreath Castle, Strathblane, Stirling Duntreath Castle, extensively remodelled in 1890 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, was the ancestral home of the Edmonstones of Duntreath. This photograph of the main drawing room of the castle was taken in 1898 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The drawing room has an elegant plasterwork ceiling and an elaborate gilded mirror over the fireplace. The room is furnished in a French style, with the minimum of clutter, and lit by brass wall brackets with candle-shaped bulbs and frilly shades. The drawing room was regarded as the ladies' territory of the house, and French styles of furniture and furnishings were thought to be particularly light and appropriate. The room was generally used for entertaining or for taking afternoon tea. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
