Scope and Content Main Entrance, Duntreath Castle, Strathblane, Stirling Duntreath Castle was extensively reconstructed in 1890 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, for its owner, Sir Archibald Edmonstone. This photograph of the main entrance to the castle was taken in 1898 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The magnificent entrance archway, inspired by Falkland Palace, acted as a 'porte-cochère', a porch large enough to admit four-wheeled carriages. It also provided a distant framed view through the courtyard to the original gatehouse beyond. The original castle was a 17th-century structure dominated by a fortified tower, dating from the 15th century, and a set of buildings around a central courtyard with a gatehouse in the north-west wall. Only the tower and gatehouse still survive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
