Scope and Content Alloa Public Baths and Gymnasium, Primrose Street, Alloa, Clackmannan The Alloa public baths and gymnasium were photographed by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shortly after they opened in 1898. The building was designed by the architectural firm of Sir John James Burnet and John Archibald Campbell. This elevation of the side entrance in Primrose Lane is impressive. The building was designed in a Scots Renaissance style, and adorned with many elaborate architectural features. The main baths hall and changing cubicles lie to the right. The baths were presented to the town by a local mill owner, John Thomson Paton, whose ancestor, John Paton, established Kilncraigs spinning mill in the early 19th century. The family, exponents of the Temperance Movement, were great patrons of Alloa. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
