Scope and Content Memorial to the Marquis of Argyll in St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been a central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. The memorial to the Marquis of Argyll, one of the leaders of the Covenanters, depicts a figure on a sarcophagus with the Argyll arms above. The window by the Glass Stainers' Company of Glasgow shows the coats of arms of the 12 Covenanter leaders. The Marquis of Argyll, a leader of the Covenanters, was responsible for the death of his enemy, the Marquis of Montrose, leader of Charles I's army in Scotland. Tried in 1661 for complicity in the death of Charles I, he was beheaded at the Mercat Cross. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
