Scope and Content Number 2 Winder, Seafield Colliery, Kirkcaldy, Fife Seafield Colliery was sunk by the National Coal Board in 1954-66. It was one of five new super-pits and, in its heyday in 1970, employed 2,466 people. It was closed in 1988. Unlike traditional headframes, the winding towers contain winders mounted directly over the shafts. This is the one above Number 2 Shaft. The 660kW electric motor can lift cages and skips from the underground workings at up to 9.2m per second. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
