Scope and Content Edinburgh Public Library (now the Edinburgh Central Public Library), George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, from the south-west The Edinburgh Public Library, designed in 1887-90 by George Washington Browne, was funded by an endowment from the Scottish-born philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. This photograph of the exterior was taken in 1893 by the photographer, Bedford Lemere. This splendid building, designed in the French style of François I, has a two-storeyed pilastered, arched and panelled east front to George IV Bridge, and a south elevation which extends four storeys below street level to the Cowgate. Many of Scotland's public libraries built in the late 19th century were partially or wholly financed by Andrew Carnegie. He laid the foundation stone of the Edinburgh Public Library in 1887, and the building opened in 1890 at a cost of £50,000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
