Scope and Content Interior of Redfern Ltd, Ladies' Tailors, Nos 31-2 Princes Street, Edinburgh This photograph of the interior of Redfern Ltd, 'Artists in Ladies' Dress', was taken by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shortly after their new ladies' tailoring premises opened at Nos 31-2 Princes Street, Edinburgh, in 1893. This room, dominated by a huge mirror, is lined with wooden panelling and a wallpaper carrying huge Scottish thistles. The mannequins display the latest fashions in ladies' dress, and the spinning wheel seems to suggest the hand-crafting of the fabrics. Redfern was the Victorian equivalent of 'haute couture' where ladies could go to have dresses made-to-measure. High fashion of the 1890s included 'leg of mutton' sleeves, 'wasp waists', 'pouter pigeon' bodices and hats trimmed with exotic feathers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
