Scope and Content River Tweed, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders Ravenswood, a large estate of woodland and parkland on the south bank of the River Tweed, lies opposite the influx of Leader Water, east of the town of Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the estate in 1893. The estate borders the River Tweed along its south bank, in a magnificent setting as the river flows through a wooded gorge, almost secluded from the outside world, and opposite a renowned view point, made famous by the author, Sir Walter Scott. The River Tweed rises in the Southern Uplands of Scotland, and flows eastwards for over 160km to the North Sea at Berwick-upon-Tweed, forming, for some of its course, the boundary between Scotland and England. It is one of Scotland's largest rivers famous for its salmon fishing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
