Scope and Content Summer House, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders The summer house at Ravenswood, a large estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was designed c.1892 by the architect, John Starforth. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building in 1893. This charming stone-built summer house, perched high on the crest of a hill, has views over fields to the valley of the Tweed below. Its unusual hexagonal shape takes full advantage of the awkward site, with a large arched window in the north face for river views. The estate borders the River Tweed along its south bank in a magnificent setting as the river flows through a wooded gorge. It owned the fishing rights along this stretch of water, the main catch being salmon and, to a lesser extent, a strain of sea trout unique to the Tweed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
