Scope and Content Summer House, Ravenswood, Melrose, Scottish Borders The summer house at Ravenswood, a large estate on the south bank of the River Tweed, east of the town of Melrose, was designed c.1892 by the architect, John Starforth. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building in 1893. This little stone-built house, with tall chimneys and a steeply pitched pantiled roof, stands perched on a hilltop in an idyllic woodland setting overlooking the valley of the Tweed. The entrance front is dominated by a triangular pediment with a ball finial, and the ridges of the roof are decorated with cast iron crestings. John Starforth (1823-98) was educated at Durham University. He was apprenticed to William Burns and David Bryce in Edinburgh, and later set up his own practice in the city. Much of his work was done in the Scottish Borders, including St Andrew's Church, Moffat, and Peebles Hydropathic Hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
