Scope and Content Council Chamber, the City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow, from the south The Glasgow City Chambers, designed by William Young as the headquarters of the City Council, were formally opened by Queen Victoria in 1888. This photograph of the council chamber was taken in c.1890 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The chamber, described as being 'of sombre and solid aspect, befitting the deliberations of a Town Council', is decorated in Spanish mahogany with a deep frieze of greenish-gold Tynecastle Tapestry, and a gilded ceiling with a central dome. The chamber is where the City Council meets formally. Each of the 79 elected councillors has a designated seat arranged around the Lord Provost's chair, a gift from Queen Victoria at the formal opening. The first council meeting was held in October 1889. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
