Scope and Content Mahogany Salon, the City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow This photograph of the Mahogany Salon, a reception room in the Glasgow City Chambers, was taken in c.1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The City Chambers, designed by William Young, were the headquarters of Glasgow City Council. The richly-decorated mahogany salon owes its dark colour to the Cuban mahogany and walnut panels on the walls and around the fireplace, installed by Alexander Mackenzie & Company. An arcade carries shallow, coffered barrel-vaults along the fireplace wall. The mahogany salon served as an ante-room for the banqueting hall on the north side of the chambers, and was one of three reception rooms on the second floor (the 'piano nobile') that were used for civic functions and large meetings.
