Scope and Content Committee Room, City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow The Glasgow City Chambers, designed in a lavish style by William Young, were the headquarters of the Glasgow City Council. This photograph of a committee room, one of three in the building, was taken c.1890 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has a richly embossed frieze above brightly coloured Tynecastle Tapestry wallcovering, and elaborately carved woodwork in mahogany and walnut. The leather covered chair seems to have been deliberately positioned for the photograph. Although the city council met formally in the council chamber, most of its day-to-day business was carried out by groups of councillors meeting for discussion in one of the committee rooms. The first committee meeting was held in 1889. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
