Scope and Content City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow, from the south-west The Glasgow City Chambers were designed by William Young on a lavish scale which reflected the city's wealth and importance at the end of the 19th century. The George Square façade was photographed in c.1890 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This main façade forms a backdrop to the wide expanse of George Square. Its centrepiece, with three tiers of paired Classical columns, is topped by a carved pediment. The second floor, designated by a band of ornamented windows, contains the public rooms. William Young, a Paisley-born architect with a London practice, won the second competition for a design for the building with a plan that exactly fitted the brief. The foundation stone was laid in 1883, and Queen Victoria opened the Chambers in 1888. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
