Scope and Content General Reading Room of the Elder Library, No 228 Langlands Road, Govan, Glasgow The Elder Library, designed by Sir John James Burnet as the District Library for the burgh of Govan, was funded by an endowment from the philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. The interior was photographed in 1903 by the photographer, Bedford Lemere. The wooden-panelled reading room has a glass screen with sliding doors leading to the ladies' reading room beyond. The tables have sloping tops and umbrella rings, and the chairs have cushioned feet and brass rails to allow them to be moved in silence. The library had a lending department, and a general reading room with a collection of reference books, selected magazines and newspapers. It also had separate reading rooms for women, boys and girls, each provided with a stock of suitable books. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
