Scope and Content Council Chamber, The Municipal Buildings (now Council Offices), Nos 2-26 High Street, Perth The Municipal Buildings, designed in 1877-9 by the architect, Andrew Heiton Junior, housed the offices of Perth Town Council. This photograph of the main council chamber was taken in 1891 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The council chamber, designed in the style of a medieval hall, has a splendid hammerbeam roof, oak-panelled dado and a magnificent hooded Baronial fireplace. The councillors' chairs are arranged around an unusual horseshoe-shaped table. The town council gathered for formal meetings in the hall. Each of the 17 elected councillors had a designated seat facing a platform (foreground) where the Lord Provost sat behind the mace, his gold-plated staff of office and the symbol of his authority.
