Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Alloa Public Baths and Gymnasium, Primrose Street, Alloa, Clackmannan Alloa Public Baths and Gymnasium, designed in 1895-8 by the architects, Sir John James Burnet and John Archibald Campbell, opened in 1898. The interior was photographed shortly afterwards by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The entrance hall, designed with banded and chequered tilework, has a strong Moorish character. An iron turnstile (right) led swimmers to the pond (note sign which reads: 'Place pond tickets here'), and the staircase gave access to the gymnasium. Although there are no figures in the photograph, there seems to be a deliberate attempt to create a busy atmosphere with the entrance door left open and an umbrella lying casually in the stand. The poster above advertises gymnastic and fencing lessons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
