Scope and Content Drawing Room, Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, Innerleithen Road, Peebles This photograph of the drawing room of the Peebles Hotel Hydropathic was taken in 1894 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hotel opened in 1881 to provide water cures for the annual treatment of disease. The drawing room, with splendid views over the valley of the River Tweed, was the main room of the hotel where guests could gather to gossip or play cards. It had comfortable padded sofas and footstools, and an array of small tables for card players. Under the medical directorship of Professor Petsky, the hotel offered its guests 'the energetic application of hydrotherapeutic measures' including volcanic mud baths and douches, and recommended electrical treatments, massage and special diets.
