Scope and Content Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, Innerleithen Road, Peebles, from the south-east Peebles Hotel Hydropathic, one of many hydropathics built in Britain in the second half of the 19th century, opened in 1881. This photograph of the hotel was taken from the front lawn in 1894 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This impressive five-storeyed hotel, designed in a French Renaissance style, stood on the wooded slopes of Venlaw. The east end of the front lawn was laid out for tennis, and the hotel had a magnificent conservatory built as an extension to the west. Early hotel brochures offer a range of outdoor activities including tennis and croquet. The hotel had a putting green and an oval cycle track where guests could rent bicycles, and recommended salmon fishing on the River Tweed, shooting and otter hunting.
