Scope and Content Auditorium, the McEwan Hall, Teviot Place, Edinburgh This photograph of the splendid auditorium of the McEwan Hall was taken in c.1897 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hall was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson for the University of Edinburgh, and completed in 1897. The hall, set out on a D-plan, has an apse containing a Baroque-cased organ in the straight side (left). The platform in front has stalls for members of the University Senate, and three special seats for the University Chancellor, Rector and Principal. The arrangement of the platform was specially designed for university ceremonies. At graduation, students would file forwards to have their degrees conferred by the Chancellor by being 'capped' with a mortar board said to have belonged to John Knox.
