Scope and Content Swaddled putto over entrance to walled garden, Falkland Palace, Fife Falkland Palace was remodelled in 1537-41 for King James V (died 1542). The south range dates from his reign, as do the exteriors of the earlier buildings. The east and north ranges were probably both built for King James IV (1488-1513). This swaddled putto - a child wrapped in swaddling clothes - over the walled garden's entrance is probably a late 19th-century addition. However the masonry may originate from 1513 when it is recorded that a walled garden was created. Falkland Palace's late 19th-century alterations and restorations were carried out for John Crighton-Stuart, 3rd Marquis of Bute, who became Hereditary Keeper in 1887.
