Scope and Content Nesting boxes in wall of shed, Quivals Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands The house at Quivals was originally built as the island's school perhaps in the late 18th century. The steading with its 40 acres of arable land and 10 of grazing was for the use of the school and school master. This shows nesting boxes in the hen house which is built into the garden wall behind the farmhouse. There are 13 nesting boxes built into the north wall and for a time the building was a deep-litter hen house, though its last use was as an animal shelter with access through the east end. The building also contained a toilet for the school children at one time. At that point it had a central cross wall which has since been removed. The walls are of rubble masonry with a single-pitch roof of corrugated cement asbestos sheets. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
