Description General view of house and steading from S

Date 15/8/1996

Collection Scottish Farm Buildings Survey

Catalogue Number C 78315

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 741158

Scope and Content Quivals Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south The house at Quivals was originally built as the island's school perhaps in the late 18th century. The steading with its 40 acres of arable land and 10 of grazing was for the use of the school and school master. This is a general view of the house and steading from the south. To the west (left) of the main two-storeyed house is a smaller single-storeyed extension both with graded flagstone roofs. To the west of this is a concrete block shed built on the site of an earlier shed. To the east of the house is the byre and stable range. Quivals is also noted as having housed one of the island's regional post offices. The house has notably small windows on the first floor and crowstepped gables, plus a gabled porch to the right of centre. While the house may date originally from the 18th century, there have been many alterations and additions since. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
