Scope and Content Mural monument commemorating John Naysmith, Greyfriar's burial ground, Edinburgh This mural monument commemorates John Naysmith, who died in 1613. His epitaph records that he served as Chief Surgeon to the King of France's Scots Guard. A recumbent effigy, above which the inscription panel reads 'O DEATH WHERE'S THY STING? O GRAVE WHERE IS THY VICTORY?' forms the monument's centrepiece. Emblems of death, including a hand tolling the Deid Bell (rung for funerals) decorate the pediment. The 16th-century church and churchyard of Greyfriars takes its name from a Franciscan friary which stood at the east of the Grassmarket until 1558. In 1562, Greyfriars became the Burgh burial-ground in a Crown grant made by Mary Queen of Scots. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
