Scope and Content Detail of a mural monument commemorating James Harley, Greyfriars burial ground, Edinburgh This mural monument commemorates James Harlay, a lawyer and Keeper of the Privy Seal, who died in 1617 aged 44. Beneath the Latin inscription (which ends with 'MEMENTO MORI' or Remember Death) are various emblems used to signify death and mortality. On the left are crossed coffins, an hourglass and an arm tolling the 'deid bell', used to give notice of funerals. The 16th-century church and churchyard of Greyfriars takes its name from a Franciscan friary which stood at the east of the Grassmarket until 1558. In 1562, Greyfriars became the Burgh burial-ground in a Crown grant made by Mary Queen of Scots. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
