Scope and Content Main Street, West Wemyss, Fife West Wemyss became a burgh of barony in 1551. Initially its economy was based on salt-making though it had a harbour by 1621. In the 19th century, the town became dominated by the coal industry. The white building on the hill with an octagonal lanterned belvedere or turret in the centre of the roof is the Belvedere, dated 1927. Most of the other houses date from the early 19th century.
