Scope and Content Main Street, West Wemyss, Fife West Wemyss became a burgh of barony in 1551. Initially its economy was based on salt-making though it had a harbour by 1621. In the 19th century, the town became dominated by the coal industry. The white crenellated building at the end of the street is Coxstool, built in about 1900. Most of the other houses date from the early 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
