Scope and Content Symbol stone known as Rhynie 5 at Rhynie Old Churchyard, Rhynie, Aberdeenshire Rhynie 5 is one of three symbol stones now within the kirkyard, and one of eight found in the overall area. It was found within the foundations of the kirk itself. There are three cup-marks on the reverse suggesting the stone had been reused. The stone is carved with a fine beast's head, a double-disc and Z-rod and a mirror-and-comb. The head resembles that of an otter or seal and has also been called a dog's head. The comb resembles examples which maybe from the 4th or 5th century AD. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
