Scope and Content Conservative Club, No 112 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, Victorian reconstruction transformed the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. This tall building, with its asymmetrical facade, was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1882-4; it has bay-windows on the left, and a bracketed balcony on the right, both balustraded. Below the attic floor is an elegant sculptured frieze. A number of distinguished Edinburgh clubs had their premises in Princes Street, including the Conservative Club, the Liberal Club, the University Club, the Over-Seas Club and Edinburgh's most prestigious club, the New Club.
