Scope and Content Equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington, General Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh Register House was the first major work to be started in the New Town in 1774. Designed by Robert and James Adam, and completed in 1826 by Robert Reid, it was one of the first buildings in Britain designed for the specific purpose of storing archives. In front of Register House is this equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington by John Steell in 1848. The weight of the statue is supported on the hind legs and tail of the horse, and set on a red Aberdeen granite pedestal designed by David Bryce. The Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) was so delighted with this statue that he ordered two casts of it for his own home, Apsley House, London, and for Eton. The statue is often referred to as 'the Iron Duke in bronze by Steell'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
