Scope and Content Plans of Kirkcudbright Tolbooth, Dumfries and Galloway Kirkcudbright Tolbooth was paid for by local landowners and from fines. Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. The ground-floor booths were sold in 1729. In 1732 the roof was repaired and the stairs altered. Between 1751 and 1763 the burgh treasurer was paid to build the prison extension, install a cistern and convert the top floor for dancing classes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
