Scope and Content Reconstruction of Auchtermuchty Town-House (1729), Fife Auchtermuchty Town-House was built in 1728, after the burgh council decided they needed a 'good tolbooth with a clock and bell and steeple for containing the same'. It was paid for by borrowing from local tradesmen and the kirk session. This is how the town-house might have looked from when it was completed in 1729 and before the 19th-century alterations to the window and door surrounds. The original burgh bell split in 1740 and had to be shipped back to London for recasting. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
