Scope and Content Advocate's Close, High Street, Edinburgh Advocate's Close takes its name from the Lord Advocate of Scotland at the start of the 18th century, Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees. He lived here from 1692-1713. Earlier residents left their mark in other names here: Cant's, Home's, and Stewart's Close. Like other city closes it was once home to the rich and prosperous. Sir John Scougal, painter to William III and Queen Mary lived here, as did Adam Bothwell who became Abbot of Holyroodhouse in 1570. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
