Scope and Content Aerial view of Glenglassaugh Distillery and windmill, Sandend, Grampian Glenglassaugh Distillery and Sandend windmill lie c.2.5km west of Portsoy overlooking the Moray Firth. The windmill was erected c.1761 by General James Abercrombie of nearby Glassaugh House and was used to produce flour or oatmeal. This aerial view shows the remains of the circular windmill next to the distillery which was established here in 1875 and was acquired by the Highland Distillers Company in the 1890s. Rebuilt in 1960, it was periodically closed between 1907 and 1960. Built on the site of a prehistoric burial barrow or cairn, the windmill stands four storeys high. There is a wide walkway reaching to first-floor level, which gives the windmill its nickname, the 'Cup and Saucer'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
