Scope and Content Plans of Newton on Ayr Steeple, South Ayrshire Newton on Ayr Steeple is all that remains of the 18th-century town-house. Built to replace a ruinous 17th-century tolbooth, it was paid for by the town council acting on instructions from a body calling itself 'the Community'. An enclosed outside stair led to the first floor of the steeple. The door to the left led to the parish school and the one on the right led to the assembly-rooms, both part of the main block demolished in 1967 so the road could be widened.
