Scope and Content Elevation of Newton on Ayr Steeple, South Ayrshire Newton on Ayr Steeple is all that remains of the 18th-century town-house. Built to replace a ruinous 17th-century tolbooth, it was paid for by the town council acting on instructions from a body calling itself 'the Community'. In march 1795, 'the Community' instructed the council to obtain bells and a clock for the steeple. These were delivered in August. The bell was cast by Thomas Mears of London, and the clock was installed by James Allan. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
