Scope and Content Elevation of Port Glasgow Town Buildings, Inverclyde Port Glasgow Town Buildings replaced an earlier town hall found to be inadequate in 1803. An Act of Parliament was passed to allow a new one to be built but work did not begin until 1813. Funding came from public subscription and the sale of bonds. Initially, the building housed a 'Council Chamber, Justice's Court House, Prison, Bridewell & other public accommodations'. From before 1850, there were also ground-floor shops and a reading-room and merchants' counting offices on the first floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
