Scope and Content First-floor plan of Saltcoats Town-house, North Ayrshire Saltcoats Town-house was built by a group of inhabitants who 'felt great inconvenience' because of the need for a clock and a lock-up 'for disorderly persons', and that a burgh needed a steeple as an 'ornament'. Funding came from public subscription. The interior has been much altered. It was intended 'to contain certain shops below, and a large room with two retiring rooms above' as well as a jail and a steeple for the clock. The openings to the left lead into the Town Hall, completed in 1892. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
