Scope and Content Plans of Brechin Town-house, Angus Brechin Town-house was built to replace a 17th-century tolbooth which was 'in great disrepair'. A public subscription together with donations from the local MP and also the guildry provided the construction funds. A bell rope hung in the recess to the right of the first-floor east window. The ground floor originally held a shop, a court-room, 'a tolerably decent apartment for debtors, and two wretched, dirty cells for criminals,' and later a police station.
