Scope and Content RW Forsyth's department store, No 30 Princes Street, Edinburgh R W Forsyth's, on the corner of St Andrew Street, was designed by John James Burnet in 1906-7 in an opulent Renaissance style, and was the first steel-framed building in Scotland. It is now Burton's department store. This large six-storey Edwardian store has Ionic columns on the third and fourth floors, above which is an eaves gallery with carved figures by Birnie Rhind and W Reid Dick. The corner tower is topped by a gilded openwork sphere by Gilbert Bayes. The interior has a early Renaissance-style marble staircase with very shallow rises which allowed Edwardian ladies in ankle-length dresses to ascend easily. The ends of the handrails are carved as heads of beasts, in typical Burnet style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
