Scope and Content First-floor plan of Newburgh Town-house, Fife Newburgh Town-house replaced an earlier 16th century tolbooth after the town council petitioned the Secretary of State for War, Henry Dundas, for government assistance in building a new tolbooth. Work began in 1808. Though the council had decided on a new town house in 1796 and acquired land in 1800, work only began in 1808, funded by a £500 loan. The Town-house was ready for glazing in 1810, but the 'Town Hall' was not completely fitted up until 1815. It was proposed to buy a burgh bell in 1815, but it is not clear whether one was actually purchased. The current bell, by Mears and Stainbank of London, was cast in 1859 and recast in 1869.
