Scope and Content Plans of Old Aberdeen Town-house, City of Aberdeen Old Aberdeen Town-house was built on the site of an earlier tolbooth. Much of the funding came from individual councillors who hired the council convenor as architect and contractor, perhaps because they trusted him to keep the costs down. The rooms were often let for purposes such as dancing-lessons and dramatic performances. It was also used by the merchant's society, incorporated trades and Masonic lodge who had helped in funding its construction. They had to share a single key. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
