Scope and Content Scottish National Portrait Gallery, No 1 Queen Street, Edinburgh, from the west Early 20th century view The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, designed by Rowand Anderson for the joint use of the Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Antiquities, was built in 1885-90 for £50,000, a gift to the nation by J R Findlay, owner of the Scotsman newspaper. This huge building, with its decorated central entrance and blank upper wall, resembles the Doge's Palace in Venice. The Venetian theme is continued with the octagonal corner turrets, with niches for statues, surmounted by tall pinnacles. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery contains a large collection of paintings, drawings and photographs of famous Scots from the 16th century to the present day. It includes works by Allan Ramsay, Alexander Nasmyth, Sir David Wilkie and Henry Raeburn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
