Scope and Content Church of Scotland Office building, 117-21 George Street, Edinburgh The Church of Scotland Office building, one of the giants of George Street, was the last work of architect, Sydney Mitchell. It was built in 1909-11 for the United Free Church of Scotland, and the east extension was added in 1932-3. The asymmetrical building has a Scandinavian theme. The ground floor is of granite with triple arcades resting on Doric columns. The triple-arched windows of the second storey lie beneath an eaves gallery and a two-tiered mansard roof. Referred to colloquially throughout the Church of Scotland as '121', the building houses most of the central administrative and service departments of the church, as well as committee rooms and a small chapel.
