Scope and Content Bank of Scotland building, 101-3 George Street, Edinburgh The Bank of Scotland building was designed by John More Dick Peddie in 1883-5 to assert the bank's presence in the New Town. Its splendid banking hall was restored in 1978. This elegant building, built like an Italian palace, has an arch with a tympanum carved by the sculptor, David Stevenson, instead of a balancing porch in the right-handed bay. From 1825 onwards, Edinburgh banks began to move their head offices from the Old Town into the New. Their new purpose-built buildings were designed like Italian palaces, with banking or telling halls on a grand scale. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
