Scope and Content George Street, Edinburgh Early 20th-century drawing of No 78-80, now the National Westminster Bank The National Westminster Bank building was designed originally as a department store for the Professional and Civil Service Supply Association by Sir John Burnet in 1903-7. In 1975 it became the bank's first office in Edinburgh. The entrance to this huge Edwardian department store was through a recessed portico. The upper floors, with giant columns, were originally the sales floors. The gallery, between the end domes, was the restaurant floor. The National Westminster Bank, founded in 1971 in the amalgamation of three London-based banks, was the first of the 'big four' English clearing banks to establish an Edinburgh office in 1975.
