Scope and Content Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society building, 78-80 George Street, Edinburgh, now the National Westminster Bank The National Westminster Bank building was designed originally as a department store for the Professional and Civil Service Supply Association by Sir John Burnet in 1903-7. In 1936 it was taken over by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society. The interior, representing a high-peak of Edwardian store planning, was altered for the Co-operative Society about 1936, and the recessed entrance portico filled up with Art Deco granite. In 1972 the exterior of the building was restored as far as possible to its original design, and the interior totally removed in a conversion to modern office use for the National Westminster Bank, the first English bank to establish a base in Scotland.
